Here are some examples of the artist Kiki Smith. I was drawn to the 1st piece of work “Tail” first as i like that she has created her own objects and brought new meaning to it by adding a new element.
The piece as a whole allows the viewer to really think about what the artist is trying to tell us.
The middle piece i was drawn to as it is an unusual presentation method. The object are connected and yet they are allowes the viewer to interperated them in a new light.
Self Neg. Project Artist Research 2
I found this piece “Me Corner of Haight & Ashbury” by Karen Kilimnick quite influential in my project research. I really enjoyed the simplicity of combing ideas. Kilimnick has used both 3-dimentional and 2-dimentional elements in this piece which greatly appeals to me. She has also thought carefully about mood and harmony with her very basic colour palette.
Self-Negotiated Brief 1
For this project i decided to react to a piece of text and create a 3 dimentional narrative. I also experimented with objects relative to the text.
My main inspiration for this project was the work of Carol Bove. I enjoyed the way Bove looked at elements of display and how to convey a narrative without using text.
I admired the way she presented her work created a sense of narrative ven though each object is completely separate.
Simply by isolating a series of objects, the viewer is left to interperate the story at their will.
NARRATIVES Explained- art that tells a story
1-simultaneous narrative-focussing on abstract arrangements, common in illiterate countries as a means of communication/ expression. Open to interpretation.
2-monoscenic narrative-narrative representing a single scene,
3-continuous narrative-multiple scenes in one frame, no “dividers”, emphasises change in movement
4-synoptic narrative-one scene but features the same character many times, multiple actions are taking place
5-panoptic narrative-multiple similar scenes, non repetition of characters, focussing on setting or actions
6-progressive narrative-single scene, characters do not repeat, multiple actions taking place to convey a sense of time passing, sequence dependant on location
7-sequential narrative- focusses on enfragment , each frame is a particular scene during a particular moment (comics etc.)
During his last visit to GSA, Shrigley gave a talk and discussed this video. He said that a narrative can be as basic as you like. The audience is challenged to imagine just what the character is dreaming about. Most of the video is played on a loop but subtle jerks and movements by the character suggest a narrative. The lack of setting is typical of Shrigleys work. The audience is shown only what they need to know(a bed). This is a minimal narrative style.
ARTIST RESEARCH-FOUND DRAWING PROJECT POST 3
Another artist whose way of documenting and recording has greatly inspired me is that of Rachel Whiteread. In her piece “House”, she has cast the negative space inside the house and then removed the outer shell to reveal a plaster core. I thought that this could maybe be applied to acts of weathering- eg, casting pot-holes or cracks to give a new shape. I think that by creating these inverted shapes, the authorship is returned to the object.
I think that the lack of colour here, stresses the man-made feel of the piece.
Whitereads son collected some sticks. The artist expressed their physical relationship to guns and arranged them in an orderly fashion. I thought that this was a great way of initiating a concept.
ARTIST RESEARCH-FOUND DRAWING PROJECT POST 2
Another artist to influence my creative research is that of Rebecca Horn. Both Horns sculpture/installations and 2-dimentional drawings have always caught my attention since i was fortunate to view her work in Bonn, Germany. In her installation work, i adorn the way that organic form seems to interupt and unsettle her assembled compositions. Forms grow and settle on walls. Her piece “Pencil Mask” was an interesting example of how one can go about recreating an image. Although the artist here is the author, she has no control over the direction of each pencil. Only the facial movement are recorded in the sheets of paper in this performance piece.
While most of Horns work are 3-Dimensional, i feel that these are valid examples of drawings as she is trying to create and trace objects within reality, or an emotional state through careful consideration to composition.
ARTIST RESEARCH-FOUND DRAWING PROJECT
For my project i am dealing with the idea of drawings made by natural weathering. The work of Scottish Artist Richard Long is of great inspiration to me in this projct. Long deals with the recreation or reassembly of geometric organic forms and has a minimalistic approach through the documentation and presentation of his work. “A line made by Walking” sees a straight line formed by the repetion of persons walking in a line, creating a perfect line through a field.
I found that the attention he draws on how man effects the environment was of particular value to me in this project.
Found Drawing Post 2
I am now sorting through my images to imagine what theme or themes can apply to them. I think that in the past i am quite close-minded about what it is i want to gain from a project but with this project i really want to create not a final piece or pieces but rather a body of work, exploring both 2D and 3D ideas. i feel that this project is quite expressive in that way.
